Mauro Franchino has made his Gattinara since 1962. The wines come from a small 3 hectare site in an excellent terroir with almost no top soils on an igneous bedrock, formed by rising magma which has a very PH.
The cellar is in the centro storico of Gattinara, a hemmed in courtyard from another age. No office space is wasted on fax machines or computers, certainly no data contract on his phone. Fermentation is in concrete tanks and ageing in large botti, it is the definition of great, traditional wine. The vintage decides the production, it can be a Gattinara and/or a Coste della Sesia, both are made entirely from Nebbiolo, the total number of bottles never exceeds 3000.
Gattinara is one of nine appellations, collectively known as the Alto Piemonte. It is dominated by three producers who control 90% of the production, the remaining ten hectares are shared between artisan vignaioli and some hobbyists, most of whom have held onto the tradition of using a sketch of the crumbling Gattinara tower on their labels.
