Sant Agnese Kalendamaia
This is quite a different take on the normal Vermentino widely found in the coastal region of Tuscany. Vermentino is widely planted from the South of France through Corsica, Sardegna, Piemonte, Liguria and Toscana, Paolo has planted a Corsican clone which he feels has more perfume and spice, a more interesting spectrum of flavours. Usually the vine is well suited to fresh, young, simple wines, there is far more to Vermentino though, it will mature over a great many years and keeps its freshness, developing an almost Riesling-like character. There is a limited pool of great white wine to call on in Tuscany and this is a step towards rectifying this. Experiments with wild yeast fermentation and extreme skin contact are surprisingly enjoyable and have influenced the wines.
The vineyards are guyot trained, planted on the flatter part of the land which has deeper clays at a density of 5500 plants per hectare. The harvest is manual, usually in the second week of September. The must macerates for three days at 5°C prior to fermentation in concrete tanks at 15°C.
The classic Vermentino characteristics have been identified, assembled and multiplied. There is a lovely freshness, rounded leesy fruit, concentrated herb, lavender, grapefruit and melon, and mouth cleaning minerality. Simply, a wine packed with vigour and fun. 2013 was a hot vintage and the ripeness shows through in the whites especially. The rarely known characteristic of Vermentino is its ability to age, in this case it is quite Viognier-like in youth and will develop some Riesling traits. Lovely with monkfish served with a lobster sauce. 6000 bottles produced. 13.5%
