Marco Sambin Marcus
Rosso Veneto IGT
Grapes Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (15%) and Syrah (5%)
There isn’t enough Marcus to go around and I am amazed that we have been able to get any at all. For years I have been trying not to get excited about and have failed, we have an excellent producer from the Euganean Hills already in Giordano Emo Capodilista, but this is something very different. There is no compromise at all in this wine, it is an out and out thoroughbred, a longshot that may just take the great names of Pomerol by a nose, it really is that good.
The grapes are harvested by hand through September, each variety is picked in the same day and from picking to the tank takes two hours at the most. The grapes for the wine are selected in the vineyard, de-stemmed and gently crushed before being fermented in steel tanks at 27 to 28 C using native yeasts. The wine is manually pumped over and the cap punched during fermentation. The wine is racked off into new and second year French barrique where it rests for ten to eighteen months (depending on the variety and vintage). The blend is then made and the wine is held in steel tanks for a few months before being fined with egg whites and bottled.
Only 6000 bottles are released each year.
Huge, mouth filling berry fruit, laced with strawberry and balsamic nuance. A complex and finely structured red. The temperature was above average and there is a bit more colour and warmth than usual, remarkably it retains a lovely freshness and Mediterranean feel. If pushed for a comparison I would sit it somewhere between Pomerol and Bolgheri, there is a unique concentration that in no way takes over the wine. Best 2016-2022. 13.5%
