The landlocked breadbasket of Italy, a beautiful region of rolling hills. Day to day reds are usually made from Sangiovese and whites from Trebbiano and Grechetto, the important wines come from vineyards surrounding the medieval towns of Montefalco, Torgiano and Orvieto.
The two most famous wines are often the most disappointing, Orvieto is a minefield (worth a try - Palazzone, Decugnano dei Barbi and Barberani) and I would buy Grechetto del Umbria in preference. Sagrantino di Montefalco is rarely pleasing (except for Poalo Bea’s, which is off the scale), the Rosso di Montefalco reds are nearly always better. The reason for Sagrantino’s fame is historical; it was a fine passito, a sweet red wine but for some reason it moved into the dry red category for which it is not so well suited.
