The Abruzzo

Native Vines:

• Montepulciano

Passerina (Biancame, Bianchello)
Important Wines
• Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane

A rural economy in a region with a little skiing and a lot of beach.  The most famous wine is Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, a blanket DOC that includes great and not so great wine.  There is a fashion to barrique age the Montepulciano wine and it works well, there is a cost though and these wines can lose their individuality.

Cococciola makes a supper-fresh light white and some of the top Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is excellent.  Avoid Valentini, overpriced and over-rated.

  1. Frentana. Cococciola 2015

A fantastically chilled wine, somehow it tastes like it has made no effort at all, just thrown together zesty, white floral flavours in perfect balance, slight and fine, an enticing white.

  2. Frentana. Pecorino Biologico 2015

Jasmine, melon and apricot aromas. Lime and green peppers, mineral and fresh herb flavours, quinine and dried lemon. A finely balanced, complex and very good wine.
