Region

We have imported wines from Italy for over 20 years now and we find the wines ever more unfathomable, perhaps I am taking it too seriously for this is a country full of life, literally when considering the line of volcanic activity running up its spine, and the wines are born out of a love of food and friendship.

The unique line up of wines in every region is the result of history, it is not part of some big plan.
Italy was only unified in 1870 and it is a story of independent city states rather than of a nation. This independence ensured the diversity of culture, food and wine and local traditions have been proudly defended.
Again, the more I read the less I know.

  1. Righetti. Valpolicella Ripasso 'Campolieti' 2012

Coffee, chocolate and ripe fruit on the nose, there is more than hint of Amarone in the background. This is a full and forward wine that is delicious when young and always has the structure to improve for years.

  2. Monte dei Roari. 'Palustrel' 2012

Mint and raspberry aromas, black berry and bramble fruit, ripe and round, rich with hints of after eight and kirsch, full gratuitous flavours, great fun.

  3. Sampietrana. Masseria del Gelso Squinzano Riserva 2013

A supple and welcoming wine, perhaps too easy to enjoy with its deep cassis and currant fruit, lifted with roasted pepper and mocha flavours.

  6. Ascheri. Nebbiolo d'Alba 'San Giacomo' 2014

A fresh vintage which was un-tampered with, the tannins were mature and allow violet and tar to emerge through berry and strawberry.  A lithe and handsome example of nebbiolo, ready to drink and It will develop over the next few years (to 2017).

  7. Costanzo. Mofete Rosso 2012

Fresh and pure red berry fruit, delicate spice and mineral grip with fine, ripe tannins. The finish is extraordinarily long.

  10. Ferdinando Principiano. Nebbiolo 'Coste' 2012

Sapid, loose, easy sloe and raspberry fruit, laced with violet and edging toward white chocolate on the finish.  Not a big wine, just beautifully balanced and dangerously enjoyable.
