Il Poggiolo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2006
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG
Riserva wines are made only in selected vintages, the house style was developed by Rudi’s father, Roberto Cosimi, and has evolved over time through improvements both in the vineyard and the cellar. Fermentation is in steel tanks for 21/25 days at a controlled temperature. The wine is aged for 3 years in large casks and bottled without filtration.
A finely structured Brunello where nature balanced the ingredients perfectly and Rudi watched over its progress without applying pressure. Cassis and cherry fruit with floral and mineral strands woven through. There is a tautness and restraint that somehow makes this irresistible.
2006 is one of the greatest vintages in living memory, nearly ten ten years on it still tastes fresh and the tannins are melting into the wine. This has been a hard wine to part with as I suspect it maybe Rudi’s best Brunello yet. Perhaps best served with wild boar, a revenge for their plague on Montalcino’s vineyards. Best 2018-2026. 14%
