Girlan Pinot Noir Riserva Trattmann
Pinot Nero Riserva Sudtirol Alto Adige DOC
Grape: Pinot Noir
The grapes for Trattmann are exclusively from the Holzknecht family vineyard of 'Trattmann'. There are numerous other sources of Pinot Noir from within the cooperative but this site has always been considered the best. Recently the parish of Mazzon has been mapped out and received an official stamp so far as its importance for Pinot Noir. It is one of Italy's great crus.
The vineyard is at 400m on a south facing slope whose mixed soils are mainly clay on limestone. The grapes are de-stemmed prior to a gentle pressing and fermentation with regular pumping over in steel vats for 18 to 20 days. Malolactic fermentation and ageing is in a combination of French oak barrique and 12hl botti and lasts some 15 months. The wine is held in bottle for at least 8 months before being sold. The yield is no more than 45 hl/ha and production is usually 10,000 bottles.
A big vintage, lovely fine tannic structure and warming berry fruit, very pure, very serious. 14%
