Ferdinando Principiano Barolo Serralunga
This is a vineyard with a high chalk content, less clay than much of the village which means a little less colour and typically quite delicate (by Barolo standards) wine.
This is the most immediate of Principiano’s Barolos and the better for it I suspect, whilst the spectrum of flavours is immense it is fresh with mouth cleansing properties, The Nebbiolo is made from three and a half hectares of young vines planted in the valley of Boscareto in Serralunga. The crushed grapes are fermented using the local yeasts (not an inoculation) for about a month, no sulphur is used at this stage. Ageing is for around two years in large oak casks (20 and 40hl botti). 20,000 bottles are produced each year.
Good concentration with balancing freshness, typical clear blueberry to damson fruit, fine ripe tannins and more minerality than recent vintages. 14.5%
