Favaro Freisa F2
A grape that has the tannin of Nebbiolo and the acidity of Barbera.
Freisa is a native variety in Piemonte, it is versatile and has a strong character, producers use it to make everything from frothy, sweet reds to seriously tannic monsters.
The vineyard, ‘Vigna Riva Molini’ is just a fifth of a hectare, south facing at an altitude of 380 metres with morainic soils with a high proportion of stones. The vines are Guyot trained and grapes picked by hand. The name ‘F2’ give a clue to how the wine is made, half of the Freisa is fermented conventionally, the other half utilises a whole grape technique. The wine is then assembled and aged in steel. It is a true study on the variety by a winemaker who loves and believes in the variety, Camillo has kept the essential character of the variety whilst achieving some degree of control and taming the more raucous characteristics of Freisa.
