Marzo Greco di Tufo
Greco di Tufo DOCG
The Greco is the backbone of Cantine di Marzo and this a piece of Italian wine folklore. The di Marzo family inadvertently created Greco di Tufo and the cantine has remained in the same family ever since, the vines also have remained true to the original source having been propagated in their own nursery since they were first introduced in 1647. Ferrante’s return to the cantine has seen marked improvement in wine, his ambition to move this Greco into Italy’s top echelons has come with investment in new winemaking equipment and a greater attention to detail.
The grapes are picked by hand from mid to the end of October. Free run and lightly pressed must is fermented in temperature controlled steel tanks where the wine remains until malolactic fermentation is completed. The wine is fines on the lees and given a gentle filtration before bottling.
The vineyards are guyot trained at a density of 3000 plants per hectare, the plants are between five and twenty years old. The altitude is between 350-500m, the exposure South West, this and freshening breezes moderate the climate. The soils combine meagre volcanic elements with clay and limestone.
The 2013 was a strange vintage, it was wet, then hot and the maturation of the vines faltered, then there was more rain. di Marzo waited and were rewarded by a dry spell which not only brought the extra maturation required, but good conditions for the vendemnia. Production 120,000
