Conte Emo La Montecchia Ca' Emo
Colli Euganei Rosso DOC
Grapes Merlot (60%) Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc (40%)
A classic second wine, perfectly proportioned in every sense, a scale model of their 'grand vin' if you like. It used to be called 'Cadeto' which summed the wine up rather nicely since it is made from the younger vines that in time will become ‘La Montecchia’, sadly the company behind the mundane Mouton-Cadet took a dim view and their suggested name change was accepted.
The vineyards are planted using a single guyot, the average yield 9000kg per hectare.
Vines are harvested by hand, with a grape selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
The fermentation is in steel, prior to fermentation there is a 6-8 day maceration.
Refinement is in 20hl and 40hl Slovenian barrels for 10 months. The wine is held in bottle for at least 3 months before its release.
This is a wine that is pleasing for 18 months or so after it is released and in the best vintages the wine will improve for up to 6 years
Intense, cassis and blackcurrant fruit, a very elegant wine with a fine tannic structure. The vintage has shaken some of the restraint out of the wine, a lovely interpretation. 12.5%
