Ciu Ciu Pecorino Le Merlettaie
Offida Pecorino DOCG
There is something a little mysterious about Pecorino, it seems to undergo a character change when it crosses the Tranto into the Abruzzo and becomes more serious, tighter and more mineral.
In the Marche it is more open and generous, there is minerality, but there is also lush fruit and ripe herb flavour – both versions can be world class.
Merlettaie is a certified organic vineyard at an altitude of 280m, it is clay on limestone, vines are spur trained and the grapes are picked by hand in the first part of September. The fermentation is in tonneaux, the wine remains on the lees for six months before bottling.
The Land: The vineyards are at an altitude of 280m, these are on a mixture of sand and clay. The farming is organic.
The Vine: There was a time when Pecorino was not considered good enough to make a monovarietal wine, now it has a DOCG in Offida. In the 80’s it was on the decline as fancies waned toward Sauvignon and Chardonnay, dark days indeed, and through the 90’s we refused to support such insanity. Fortunately the wheel has turned and the hipsters want authentic kit, this is the real thing. A hardy and rustic variety that prefers clay rich soils, not too much lime. The best tend to be from Offida and advances in winemaking have led to a plethora of styles, the most worrying takes advantage of the high acidity and utilises hyper-reductive winemaking to ape Sauvignon. If allowed a little more elbow-space, unique fresh wines can be made, a little oak is no bad thing and it can be an excellent source of medium bodied wines.
This vintage leans towards apricot, with kiwi and basil enriching the experience. Beautiful creamy texture, a fine complexity that suits everything from convivial company to blue cheese to fish dishes.
When it is ready and how should it be served: A wine whose depth and complexity suits everything from convivial company to blue cheese to fish dishes. Best between 2015-2018. 14%
