Ascheri Montalupa Viognier
When I joined the wine trade Viognier was the fabled white of the Northern Rhône, responsible for the most enigmatic white of them all, Condrieu; a delicacy which had to be drunk young. Planting increased exponentially through the Languedoc Roussillon, Australia and California with mixed success: when over-cropped the wines can be characterless and short-lived, when over-ripe they can be alcoholic and flabby. This is no easy vine, the best wines though mature for ten years or more and have real depth and character.
Matteo’s is a pure Viognier that has evolved with assurance since it was first released back in 1997. Though nearly all the fruit is taken from Montalupa just outside Bra, there is now a second vineyard planted on the clays of Serralunga on a North facing slope, the grapes here have more acidity and can temper the rampant ripeness of Montalupa. The time and proportion of the wine that is fermented and aged in oak is down to the vintage requirements, it changes every year.
Montalupa is a very special vineyard on steep terraces cut through the sand and limestone. The vines struggled through the early years, the drainage is a little too efficient for young vines, however as the vines roots have sunk into the rock the problems have disappeared and Matteo has been able to hone his understanding of his Viognier and Syrah.
Matteo rates this as his best vintage yet, it has a lovely rich mouthfeel, citrus and exotically tropical fruit are held around a mineral core, it is an exceptional wine.
