Ascheri Barolo Ascheri
Ascheri has just joined the select group of villages allowed to display their name, Matteo assures me that it is nothing to do with him though I hope there is some recognition for the tireless promotion of the region that he has performed.
This is taken from the vineyards which fall into the communes of both Verduno and La Morra, they are on the edge of the Barolo production zone and for this reason the habitat is a little wild with forests and scrub land. From the upper part of this vineyard the Ascheri is taken, from the lower part the Pisapola.
This is the first release of this wine, just 1000 bottles were made and it is essentially a selection from Pisapola, a vineyard that straddles Verduno and La Morra which still has the advantage of not been fashionable. This means that there is bio-diversity, there are forests and cover-crops, meadow with livestock which can do the soils and microclimate no harm at all. The actual wine is fascinating in that Matteo has gone looking for the weight and structure in an area well known for elegance, the result is immaculate and the wine does not feel forced in any way.
