Castellaccia Rosso Fantesco
Rosso di San Gimignano DOC
Rosso di San Gimignano is on the edge of the DOC and it is a marginal red wine zone for Sangiovese. Alessandro’s approach to this wine is very individual, he makes no effort to moderate the effects of the vintage so the way that it is made, and therefore the result, varies with each release. The wine always shares a distinct DNA the vineyards are organically certified and farmed biodynamically, their soils are dominated by sand and chalk on limestone bedrock.
The vineyard is organically certified and farmed biodynamically. The grapes are picked by hand and fermented in steel tanks using wild yeasts; this takes around two weeks and for the first week the wine is pumped over the rising skins twice a day. The wine is aged in steel tank for a year before bottling.
This was an exceptional vintage for Sangiovese in San Gimignano, as a rule the cooler microclimate of this region tests the nerve of growers and the results at best are fresh wines laced with delicate fruit and herb, this 2011 however has the gut and feel of a Montalcino wine.
Browning in an orderly fashion, ripe spiced damson, black cherry and prune with a mineral freshness and fine tannins, supple and balanced, a beautiful wine. (14.5%)
